Adobe and Spoon Will Work Together

Over the coming weeks Adobe and the Spoon Foundation will be working together to donate the Flex SDK to the Apache Software Foundation.

The project will be jointly led by developers from the Flex SDK team, members of the Spoon Project, key developers from the community and contributors from enterprise companies using Flex.

Continued development will happen under this new governance model.

The Open Spoon Foundation board and officers are excited by these continued developments and looking forward to the collaboration. Details will be evolving rapidly, check back here for continued updates.

Your intentions are pure but who will maintain the flash to ios compiler?
Flash player is not open-source either it’s not possible to gather new people from open source world without that.
If Adobe free the code source they own and let open source project fill the gaps
like OpenJDK in Java I can see a future else I give up Flex and start to suffer but not in silence.

Flash-to-iOS is AIR and AIR is in the plans of Adobe for development, evolution and support, so don’t worry about that…

This could be a great movement! I always think that Flash and Flex should be managed by a foundation like apache. Flex is going that direction, but what’s about Flash Player? That should come in the long term.

The main diference between other OS projects managed by foundations like apache is that all this projects was “server side”. The “front end side” has a very different nature since it needs to avoid fragmentation (like browsers and HTML does) and need a trusted foundation where efforts from companies and community could live. We need to have a common viewer (this contrast with server side code that live in diferent servers and technologies).

Hope this will be a step in the right direction and other companies will see the oportunity to come to this project and be part of this effort.

Please make compilation to HTML5 your absolute top priority. Thinking about the long term, it’s the only chance our beloved Flex framework can survive.

Agree with Borek. HTML5 must be priority since Flash Players future doesn’t seem to be bright.

Please fix your CSS for the comments. The text shadow you’re trying to do actually makes my eyes water trying to read it.

Spoon is all good and well, but unless your goal is to find a way to go from Flex to HTML5/CSS3/JS, it is pointless.

If no one maintains the Flex to iOS compiler, it is pointless.

Spoon should acquire Corporate Steward(s) to build confidence in the organization and Flex’s future. Someone like Google, who benefits by increasing the number of applications available on the web (rather than natively on a client). This would be a win-win for everyone.
