Apache Flex Community Revue December 2012

One year in the making… As we approach the end of our first year outside of Adobe, it is hard to see all the progress that has been made by the community since it was announced that Adobe was no longer directly supporting the product. If you get a chance, take a quick peek at the Apache Mailinglist stats for the last 30 days — our project has one of the busiest lists hosted at Apache — with an average of 111.6 messages per day. I know personally I have a hard time keeping up with all the cool things that everybody is...

Marching on and gearing up Spring melted away, Summer sizzled, Fall slipped away and now we are at Winter’s doorstep. I only know this because all of my local stores have been decorated with Christmas stuff for the last 3 months The Apache Flex team has been getting into the groove and moving things forward. As of the 13th of November, the “Apache Flex SDK Installer” has been approved and posted to the website, work on Apache Flex 4.9.0 is progressing nicely, and steps are being taking to graduate as a top-level Apache project. Apache...

Is It Fall Already? With the first release of Apache Flex™ 4.8.0 out the door, we’ve been hard at work making sure that everybody has a good experience using them.  Om and Erik de Bruin have been hard at work to make the “Apache Flex Installer” which is a cool tool that makes an IDE-compatible version of the SDK.  This will reduce the number of steps that are required to get up and working with the Apache SDK. Additionally, Adobe has been hard at work getting the final legal clearance for their new “Falcon” compiler. This is...

Welcome Apache Flex’s First Release! After a long trip with lots of speed-bumps, the incubation team on the Apache Flex project has finally pushed out the door their first release! Known as Apache Flex 4.8.0-incubating, this version is extremely similar to Adobe’s last release, 4.6.0. The major difference is the licensing model, in which you, as an end user are now bound by Apache’s license rather than Adobe’s. This is good for you and the community — Apache’s license is much less restrictive and more geared towards the...

Path to Parity During the month of July, the Apache Flex team plans to release the Apache Flex 4.8.0 SDK, which is intended to be a parity release of Adobe’s 4.6 SDK.  June was a big month as the community has been hard at work to prepare for this 4.8.0 release.  You can check out the release candidate HERE (make sure to check out the README to see the steps required to compile or download it).  4.8.0 will have both binary distributions and source versions available.  Testing is ongoing and your assistance is requested. Apache Flex...

The last few months have been a test of everyone’s patience. All of the components required to move the Apache Flex Project forward have been coming in small bite-size contributions. That is not to belittle how much has already been donated by Adobe — there have been significant legal and technical challenges needed to be overcome to get us where we are today. Let’s review what has happened in the donation process: Apache has received the entire Flex Framework. This includes all components that were completed in Adobe’s 4.6.0...
